The recruitment process includes attracting, screening, and selecting qualified people for a job at an organization or firm. The recruitment process is one of the most important job of the human resources department of a company or firm.

Identifying Job Vacancy

Selecting the right candidate for a job post is done by selected professionals of the human resource department of a company. The first step of the recruitment process is to identify the vacancy. Vacancies may arise due to creation of a new job or jobs, or when an existing member of staff has been promoted or is retiring. The human resource department identifies all such vacancies and makes a record.

Once the vacancy is identified, a job description is updated and an employee specification is written. The job description lists the duties and responsibilities of the job. The employee specification mentions details of experience, skills and abilities required to do the job.

Job Advertisement and Application Form

Next is the time to advertise about the vacancy so that interested candidates can be informed. A vacancy advertisement is written and is circulated via bulletin, newspapers, internet recruitment sites, specialist publications, employment service and other suitable media.

Application forms are sent out along with copies of the job description and employee specification. These application forms, duly filled and signed by the applicant , must be returned on or before the pre-defined closing date.

Shortlisting and Written Test

A company receives a number of applications for each post. A shortlist is compiled of applicants to be invited for a written test or interview. Short listing is done by an expert recruitment panel.

Most companies take a written test to determine the suitability of a candidate of a particular job. Most such test include topics such as mathematics, English, current affairs, general knowledge and some questions related to the specific job.

Job Interview and Selection

Next is the interview, which is often done by a panel of experts. Most common questions asked during interviews include:

  1. Details on personal background and education
  2. Reason to apply for the particular job and the company
  3. Previous job experience and salary
  4. Expected salary
  5. Reason to get selected

After the interview, panels of experts select the best suitable candidate for the vacant post. Sometimes a criminal disclosure check is done to ascertain the background record of the candidate.

After the selection process is over, appointment letter is sent to the successful candidates. Some job positions may need training after appointment.

Getting Selected for a Job

It is important to learn details of the vacancy and its requirements and prepare accordingly. It also helps to have prior knowledge of the company where application is made. It is the right of the candidates to complain if they feel they have been unfairly treated.
